A wild Samsung Cetus appears – Windows Phone 7 & 4-inch screen

Ooh, here we go: the Bluetooth SIG has put some info up on their site about a new Samsung phone that’s on the radar. And given the source, it’s a bit of news which is as good as an official confirmation from Samsung themselves, which is exciting, since it’s an entry about the Samsung i917. Or as they’re calling it, the Samsung Cetus.
The spec’s really rather impressive, y’see. You’re looking at a 4 inch AMOLED touchscreen, a 5MP camera, and all the other gubbins you’d expect, like WiFi. But it’s the OS that’s important, and that has me rather excited about the Samsung Cetus.
And it’s exciting because the Samsung Cetus is a Windows Phone 7 handset…
Hmm, from the spec, I’ll tell you what it sounds like; it sounds like a Samsung Galaxy S with Windows Phone 7 on, instead of Android. And that is definitely enough to pique my interest, since it’ll be at least as powerful as the Galaxy S, and possibly even faster. And it’ll be going up against the HTC Mondrian, or HTC Gold, or whatever the hell it ends up being called, so that’s gonna be a scrap that’s worth watching.
Oh, and a quick word on the name, since I’m ever so slightly depressed that not many people seem to know what the name means (and no, I didn’t need to google this, before you ask). ‘Cetus’. S’a constellation, y’see, named (technically) after a Greek sea monster, but it’s more commonly called ‘the whale’ (since Cetus the monster went on to provide the name for the order Cetacea. As in whales.
Honestly, I would expect mobile phone bloggers to know basic astronomy and taxonomy.
However, amusingly, the name also gives me a nickname for the phone, since the only thing I can think of, when I see the name Cetus, is “Ceti Alpha 6″. Therefore, until I get bored of it, this phone is now officially the Samsung Wrath Of Khan…
